Cloud9 Upset LYON 3-1 to Book First Worlds Trip Since 2023

Cloud9 have qualified for Worlds 2026. They beat LYON 3-1 in the LCS 2026 Summer Playoffs, making them the first LCS team to lock in a spot at the tournament. The result also secures the organization a place at the LCS Finals weekend at Gas South Arena.

The upset matters because of who Cloud9 beat and how long they have waited. LYON are the current LCS champions and were expected to do better than their showing here. Cloud9 and veteran jungler Robert "Blaber" Huang return to the Worlds stage for the first time since 2023, while ADC Edward "Tactical" Ra reaches an international event for the first time since Worlds 2021.

How the series unfolded

Cloud9 took control of the series in the draft. In Game 1 they built a front-to-back composition of K'Sante, Xin Zhao, Syndra, Ezreal and Karma, and the range advantage proved too much for LYON's short-range lineup. Kang "Saint" Sung-in's Locke was particularly lackluster, and Cloud9 opened with a 1-0 lead.

Game 2 was the series' most closely contested game. The standout moment was an extended top-lane fight that began at Cloud9's base and ended two minutes later at the Elder Dragon pit. LYON came out on top to level the series, though Cloud9 had shown they could go toe-to-toe with the champions.

Game 3 turned on a moment of poor discipline from LYON. Support Jonah "Isles" Rosario was caught 26 minutes in, the latest first blood of the 2026 LCS season. LYON then overforced a fight at the Baron pit, which decided the game and put Cloud9 on match point.

Game 4 was the most one-sided game of the series. Cloud9 drafted a global-ultimate composition around Nocturne and Shen alongside a Kennen, and it dismantled LYON without allowing them a single kill.

Blaber sets the tempo

Blaber was named series MVP. He outplayed Kacper "Inspired" Słoma's methodical style by applying constant pressure across all three lanes, and he particularly targeted LYON top laner Niship "Dhokla" Doshi. Inspired had a particularly rough series, and LYON looked sloppy in the macro game.

The moment was emotional for the jungler. Sheep Esports posted that Blaber became emotional after qualifying, a return to Worlds he had not made since 2023.

Tactical's return is a milestone of its own. Team Liquid ADC will play at Worlds for the first time since 2021, five years after his last international appearance.

What comes next

Cloud9 will face the winner of Team Liquid vs FlyQuest. LYON's path is harder: they still have a chance at the final Worlds slot, but must first face the winner of Team Liquid/FlyQuest vs Shopify Rebellion.
